Boxing classes
The exponential rise in interest in fitness boxing has seen the demand for boxing classes increase on a worldwide scale. Many health clubs and boxing gyms now offer sessions where the focus is more on the fitness training than the competitive aspect of the sport.
Most formal boxing classes will run for an hour and would be divided into several different categories that will ensure a total body training programme.
These will start with a complete warm-up exercise for about five to ten minutes in order to prepare muscles and tendons for the activity to come. This would be followed by resistance exercise using the boxing equipment to work on strength and endurance that in a typical boxing class will last about ten minutes.
Work is then done on technique, building up from the basic punches to the more complicated tactics and combinations, before getting to the focus of the boxing class – the punching drills. This is a period of intense bursts of two to three minute rounds which are each followed by a one minute recovery period literally to catch one’s breath and restore the oxygen levels. After about half an hour of these very strenuous rounds, participants are exhausted, drained yet exhilarated.
A cooling down interval gets the heart rate down while flexing and stretching. Any questions about the session can be discussed with the instructor during this period. In addition to the boxing class other supplementary training with weights to improve strength with specific emphasis on speed strength is given. The ability to react with lightening speed is essential in boxing and exercises have been specially developed to decrease reaction times and increase acceleration and power.
Fitness boxing classes can be offered by personal trainers who have previous boxing experience. It is essential to check if they are certified by a recognised organisation and also that they have the necessary experience before signing up for a series of classes.
